A customer experiences third-generation mobile phone network (3G) services at a TD-SCDMA exhibition hall when commercial trials of the services started April 1.
The new services received lukewarm response from Guangzhou citizens.
TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access), China's homegrown standard for 3G, is high-speed wireless connection services for 3G mobile phone users.
China Mobile displayed six brands of mobile phones including ZTE U980, Samsung L288, LG KD876, New Postcom N268, Hisense T68 and Lenovo TD800 at exhibition halls.
Many customers said that they would not hesitate to buy the phones since the 3G phone users had been promised access to faster Web browsing, on-demand TV programs and videos, apart from other services.
However, they expressed disappointment with the limited regional usage of the new 3G mobile phones which, for now, can only be used on the mainland.
Meanwhile, the customers found that 3G calling fees and phone set prices were a bit higher than those of 2G. For example, a ZTE U980, the most expensive of the six brands, costs 3,800 yuan.
The third reason to wet blanket their enthusiasm was that the services for video chatting and mobile TV programs were not mature enough to provide clear image and good viewing effects.
