A section of ancient river bank was excavated in downtown Guangzhou South China.
Expects said that the bank, which was unearthed at a construction site in the west of Datang Alley in Dezheng Zhong Lu, dated back to the Five Dynasties (AD 907-960) and Song Dynasty (AD 430-479).
Thousands of cultural relics found underground were daily life utensils in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368 - 1644) and Qing Dynasty (AD 1644-1911).
It is conferred that this bank section is the west part of ancient Qingshui River. Those blue and white porcelains and copper coins unearthed were also daily necessities in old ages. Experts said that the pieces are important clues to figure out the picture of how people lived in the past.
Most of the relics are found broken. Some were in the river, some among the junk, and a red glaze vase was found in an old well. A few of them are in good condition. However, they are still of great value.
The archaeological site is at the end of Gao Huali Alley, which lies in the west of Datang Alley in Dezheng Zhong Lu of Yuexiu District. The site is in a large pit. The bank is easily to see and the wooden houses beside the bank are all in good condition.
Local archaeologists ever unearthed a part of ancient bank under a residential construction site in the Datang Alley in 2002. Last year they found a section of relic waterway of Song Dynasty also in this alley. The place is proved to be the west part of ancient Qingshui River in Guangzhou.
The wooden houses were very large in size at that time. According to its construction style, it may be a wharf.
The old bank and wharf are important for studying the development of the city and the landscape of old Guangzhou. It is primarily estimated that this part of ancient bank was 70 meters wide in Song Dynasty.
However, this Ground Zero will not be protected or opened to the public. One expert said after data collection and relics storage, the site will be still put to construction, because this archaeological site does not reach the standard to be protected.
