The first English weekly in Guangzhou
In 1997, before Hongkong’s handover to China, instructed by Guangzhou
Committee of the Communist Party of China and Guangzhou City People’s
Government, Guangzhou Daily Press Group officially launched Guangzhou Morning
Post, the first and only English weekly in South China.
GZMP is the only press appointed by the Information Office of the
Guangzhou government for publicity overseas. In 2004, GZMP played an important
role and significantly contributed to the success of Guangzhou’s bidding for the
2010 Asian Games.
In 2002, Zhao Qizheng, director of China’s State Council Information
Office, visited Guangzhou, and he highly praised GZMP and Guangzhou Today
(another English magazine published by GZMP) as two of the best issues for
publicity overseas.
The leaders of Guangzhou Committee of the Communist Party of China
and Guangzhou City People’s Government have always shown great concerns to the
development of GZMP. Since 2003, GZMP has been a must-have on the desks of all
the relevant leaders.
Since 2004, with the intensive support from Guangzhou Daily Press
Group, the “Five-year (2003-2008) development plan of GZMP” has been implemented
at a faster pace.
In 2005, under the instruction of Lin Shusen, Secretary General of
Guangzhou Committee of the CPC, and Zhang Guangning, Mayor of the Guangzhou
City, the Guangzhou Daily Press Group is determined to speed up the development
of GZMP, making it the most authoritative and first-class English Daily in South
China as soon as possible.
A paper attractive to talents
Since the launch of GZMP, the circulation has been increasing. Now it
has enjoyed a wide readership covering Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta.
Besides, GZMP has now established friendly and cooperative relationships with
many prominent joint ventures.
GZMP’s target readers, which include foreign experts staying in
Guangzhou, high-ranked executives taking English as a second language and
college students proficient in English, are mostly talented persons of the
society.
To meet the different requirements of readers with different English
education background, GZMP has designed a series of weekly publications
including the White-Collars Weekly, College Weekly, Senior Secondary School
Weekly, Junior Secondary School Weekly, Primary School Weekly and Kids Weekly.
These publications are well appreciated by readers of all levels to be the best
choices for enhancing English reading comprehension and appreciation.
The editorial staff of GZMP is a galaxy of talents. Ninety percent of the
editors are postgraduates or with degrees granted by universities abroad. With
the joint efforts of these brilliant and creative people, GZMP has therefore
become a high quality newspaper.
The most aspired English Daily to be out soon
With a bright blueprint in hand, GZMP is planning to develop from an
English weekly into an English Daily in the soonest time to meet the strong
appeals of 1.5 to 2 million English readers in cosmopolitan city of Guangzhou
and the Pearl River Delta.
Guangzhou Morning Post, as the first English Daily targeted at high-end
readers in South China, is opening a new age of English medium in Guangzhou.
Let’s join our efforts and share the bright future.
