寻找真正的“断背山”
Nepal missing tourists: What was once a bustling tourist area in Kathmandu
is now almost empty. Civil unrest and Maoist rebels' violence in Nepal, coupled
with travel alerts by the U.S. and other Western governments, have cut tourism.
Fans of "Brokeback Mountain" don't seem to care the movie was actually
filmed in Canada. They want the Wyoming experience.
The Wyoming Business Council's travel and tourism department has received
hundreds of calls asking about scenery in the movie, which is based on Pulitzer
Prize-winner Annie Proulx's short story about two gay Wyoming cowboys.
"When we tell them it was shot in Canada, they're still interested in
Wyoming," said Michell Howard, manager of the council's film, arts and
entertainment office. "They don't hang up and call Alberta. They're intrigued in
the story."
Tourism officials have long known that a good movie can attract tourists.
New Zealand is drawing visitors to "Lord of the Rings" sites. And the film
"Sideways" didn't just create a demand for wine tours around Santa Barbara,
Calif., it boosted sales of certain wines.
Ang Lee, the director of "Brokeback Mountain," toured parts of Wyoming's
Big Horn Mountains and nearby towns when scouting locations for the film. But
because of budget concerns, Lee filmed in Canada, said Wyoming Business Council
spokesman Chuck Coon.
