Topic: Usually
boys and girls in China study together in one school. In recent years, however,
there are more and more boys’ or girls’ schools that only accept students of the same sex. Which kind of
schools, schools with both boys and girls or schools with all boys or girls, do
you prefer? And why?
FOR
11. A lot of
sick weird and disgusting things go on in same-sex “closed” workplaces and a school is a workplace. Co-ed environment is
conducive to the healthy development of children both mentally and
physically.
12. Schools
should prepare children for life and the more the school emulates “real life” the better. The co-educational system makes children more socially
adaptable.
13. The
formative years of children are the best time to expose them to the company of
the other gender, in order that they may learn each others’ behaviour and be better prepared for adult life. The number of
subjects benefiting from single-sex discussion is so small that this could
easily be organised within a co-educational system.
14. Boys do
better in the classroom if girls are present to set them a good
example.
15. Girls do
better in single sex schools but boys are “brought on” by the more studious girls in a co-educational
environment.
16. Separate
education for women would inevitably be inferior to that of men. The only way of
ensuring equality is to insist that women and men be educated
together.
AGAINST
17. In
segregated schools, boys and girls can fully develop themselves to their own
interest and abilities. In boy schools, boys can enjoy many courses specially
designed for them while it is the same with girls in girl schools.
18. Thousands of
great men and women graduated from segregated schools. They are the product of
girls-only or boys-only education.
19. The
advantages of single-sex education for boys fall into three categories: 1) fewer
distractions, 2) more diverse role models, and 3) custom-tailored and
age-appropriate learning and instruction.
20. Both girls
and boys do better in single-sex schools than they do in coeducational schools,
the single-sex advantage is greater for the boys than it is for the
girls.
21. Maintaining
separate schools for males and females is only natural, considering presumed
differences in their developmental needs and learning styles.
22. In addition
to assumptions about female learning and relational styles, proponents of
all-girls schools rely on social science to support the claim that segregation
by sex fosters achievement in girls.
23. When girls
and boys aged 12 to 17 are in the same class, all they do is to be affected by
the presence of the opposite sex.
